WordPress might be the first solution you think of when considering an open-source content management system (or maybe Drupal), but it shouldn't be the only one.
Joomla, a CMS that is used for everything from websites and blogs, custom apps and Intranets, is another - and it is being downloaded at a rapid rate of just under 1 million per month. Joomla now powers more than three percent of Web properties (source) and has been downloaded more than 50 million times.
"This is a huge milestone for the Joomla community that can be traced back to the tireless work of hundreds of thousands of contributors," said Paul Orwig, President of Open Source Matters, a non-profit created to provide organization, legal and financial support to the Joomla project. "Joomla and its collaborative community have continued to build truly versatile software that fuels its widespread adoption. We are encouraged by the rate of growth and will continue to provide the most powerful and flexible tools needed to improve the digital world."
Some other highlights about Joomla include:
- Joomla released version 3.2 in November 2013, and launched its Joomla Framework in December.
- Joomla powers 3200 government agency websites/intranets in 200+ countries.
- Joomla forums host over 630,000 members who have shared 2.8 million posts.
