There is not enough attention paid to the good deeds that happen in the technology business. Instead, we obsess over minor changes at Google or what Twitter will do to make money. When I hear of a good deed that's happened in the Web and technology industries, it's good to mention it, as it may spur others to give back in any way they can. Plus, if you know how to work it, you can get some coverage for your company, too.
Managed dedicated hosting and co-location service provider DedicatedNow announced the donation of hundreds of dedicated servers to the Urban Renewal Corp, a community-based non-profit organization that provides emergency services, counseling, housing and vocational training for the homeless and economically disadvantaged in New Jersey.
Given the current economic decline, there is no shortage of homeless or jobless citizens in America. In addition to housing and rehabilitation services, URC's goal is to find the best way to get people back to work. "The common denominator seemed to be computers," says Lane Jacobs, founder and president of URC. "Every company, regardless of the industry, needs computers to operate. So, we felt that computer training would put our clients one step ahead in their job search, "says Jacobs.
